'His England' by Matty Crawford and Joe Argent
HIS ENGLAND explores the story of a young Asian British kid questioning his home and identity, whilst proudly wearing his England football shirt - unaware of the political shifting landscapes around him.
"When I was 11 years old, I got my first England football shirt with my name and lucky number printed on the back. So when I was playing with friends I would shout ‘Crawford scores for England’ - only for my friend to turn round and say, 'too bad you can’t actually play for England, because you're Filipino'. Now he didn’t mean it maliciously but nonetheless it stuck with me – and I believed him – so for some time I didn’t feel comfortable wearing it. Years later those feelings returned to me on the morning of the EU Referendum result. I was taking the bins outside the front of my house, when a group of teens drove past and shouted leave. In that moment, I was immediately transported to how I felt as an 11 year old boy told he can't play for England". Matty Crawford
